Ready-to-wear Alterations

A ready-to-wear garment does not always fit perfectly straight off the rack - for example, shortening the sleeves and legs of suits and jackets are some common fine-tuning alterations that significantly improve the final look. As tailoring and perfect fit are our passion, we offer a wide range of alterations to our clothes performed by our tailors.

We offer a wide range of alteration and repair work for clothes from Schoffa's ready-to-wear collection

What do the most common alterations entail?

Shortening and lengthening of jacket sleeves

The sleeves of the jacket are shortened or lengthened to the optimal size, the sleeve slit is rebuilt and, if necessary, the buttons are moved to a new location. When lengthening the sleeves, we work within the length allowance - usually the allowance is about 3cm. If the jacket has functioning buttonholes, this may affect the alteration work.

Narrowing and widening of the jacket

In principle, our jackets can be narrowed or widened at the three seams on the back to achieve a better fit. The narrowing is marked with needles by our expert and determined together with the customer. Widening is carried out within the seam allowances - this is usually about 1.5cm per seam.

A drop in the collar of the jacket

The decrease in the collar of the jacket reduces the wrinkle that forms on the neck and improves the fit of the collar and the upper back. The collar drop is indicated by our expert using needles. The collar is attached by hand so that it sits as beautifully and naturally as possible.

Shortening or lengthening of trouser legs

Shortening trouser legs is a very common modification job that we do several times a day. Right sized trousers fit beautifully and harmoniously - the size is determined together with the customer. The trousers can be shortened by pleating or quilting. Turn ups with a width of four or five centimeters is also possible, if possible given the seam allowance. The extension is carried out within the seam allowance, which usually is 2-4cm.

Narrowing and widening of the waist of the trousers

The narrowing of the waist of the trousers is done from the middle seam at the back of the trousers. The amount to be reduced is indicated together by our expert. Widening the waist is also a common alteration work that is done within the seam allowance. The allowance for widening is usually 3-4cm.

Narrowing and widening of trouser legs

The trouser legs can be narrowed at the thighs, knees and/or calves to create a more streamlined fit. The amount of narrowing is marked with needles by our expert. Widening is also mostly possible within a seam allowance of about 1-2 cm.

Shortening shirt sleeves

The shirt sleeves are shortened by removing the cuffs, after which the sleeve and the slit are shortened by a suitable amount. In shirts, however, you should remember the appropriate allowance for shrinkage of about one to two percent. Coarse fabrics such as Oxford and denim should be washed a few times before shortening the sleeves, if it is a small amount to be shortened. Lengthening the sleeves on shirts is basically not possible.

Narrowing and widening of the shirt

The waist of the collared shirt is narrowed from the back side intakes. Our expert indicates the amount to be narrowed by needling and measures the appropriate gap between the body measurement and the shirt measurement. The waist of the collared shirt can also be widened in most cases, if there are insets on the back and a seam allowance left for them.
